"Still Black, At Yale" Screening @ GateWay CC

(Phoenix AZ) A screening of the documentary “Still Black, At Yale,” followed by a discussion with the filmmakers is scheduled for October 3, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. at GateWay Community College’s IE Building Room 1302—Copper Room.
Monique Watson and Andia Winslow made the movie while students at Yale University in 2004 to illustrate the sense of blackness, identity and belonging within context of racial hegemony implying that the university’s dominant social class imposes its norms onto minorities at Yale. Winslow and Walton have toured two dozen major universities and film festivals. They believe that “it is a film about every college and university and it is our hope that it will affect change and promote critical dialog on campuses across the country.”
Funding for the event comes from GateWay’s Center for Student Life. Additional support to bring the filmmakers in for the discussion came from a learning grant from the Maricopa Community College District awarded to Business and Information Technology Department Adjunct Faculty Cynthia Lasher to promote diversity education and continuing cross-cultural discussion on the GateWay campus.
Ms. Lasher says “GateWay Community College’s Diversity Committee supports the college’s commitment to foster a campus climate that welcomes, celebrates and promotes respect for diversity. The committee promotes public awareness of current events, policies and laws that impact our college campus and surrounding community.” A series of six diversity events will be held at GateWay this fall with a corresponding discussion series.
Business and Information Technology Faculty Heidi Hutchins, a recent participant in Maricopa Community College’s Diversity Infusion Program to incorporate diversity into the curriculum, encourages business faculty to include the “Still Black, At Yale” event in their syllabus and to offer extra credit for attendance.
GateWay Community College is located at 108 N. 40th Street. For more information on the “Still Black, At Yale” event or any of the six diversity events in the discussion series, contact Cynthia Lasher 602-574-7087 or cynthia.lasher@gwmail.maricopa.edu
